Jonathan Bennett ha subido tres páginas que ha dibujado con guión de Bob Thompson para el Washington Post, una especie de informe en forma de cómic sobre la novela gráfica. En ellas, entre otras cosas, muestra su entrevista con Françoise Mouly

Qué cansina y autodestructora (pensando en primera persona) me parece la actitud mental que hay que tomar para escribir algo como "LA GENTE DE LA PROSA NO PUEDE SEGUIR IGNORANDO UNA FUERZA CRECIENTE EN EL UNIVERSO EDITORIAL. ES LA HORA DE LA VERDAD CON LAS NOVELAS GRÁFICAS.
¡EL PODER DEL DIBUJO!" (y para hacer el resto de páginas).
Bienvenidas sean patochadas como esa intro, si el fin es divulgar el papel de RAW y compañía, o Eisner, o la EC, o la editorial tal, o quien-lo-que-sea en levantar/cambiar de forma directa y con intención guerrera el estatus cultural del cómic.
Bienvenidas sean también si (como en este caso o en el de muchas de las menciones del tebeo en los medios generalistas... como en cualquier otro producto cultural, claro)lo que se pretende directamente es alimentar la industria vendiendo tal o cual producto, o llamando la atención sobre la plena satisfacción emocional que supone la lectura de lo que en esta historia se denomina "graphic novel".
Pero, ¿por qué, oh, por qué, no se puede llamar a las cosas por su nombre? ¿Por qué no se menciona en ninguna de las viñetas de esas tres páginas la palabra "cómic", salvo cuando se hace referencia (sólo una vez) a la pérdida de la exclusividad distribuidora de las librerías especializadas? ¿Por qué se redunda tanto en la banal oposición "manga-graphic novel"?
De verdad, son estas cosas las que me hacen desear volver al gueto... Una simple cuestión de nombres.

Qué más sofisticado decir "novela gráfica". Es la palabrita de marras para acomplejados.
No hay que echarse las manos a la cabeza. Dentro de unos años, lo de "novela gráfica", será un término tan peyorativo como la palabra cómic.
Ya pasó antes.
Se comenta en varios sitios que ya ha habido un pase previo, con público, de "The Spirit". Habría sido esta semana en el teatro Rave de Las Vegas.
Varios espectadores abandonaron la sala en los primeros diez minutos y la sensación general es de absoluto fracaso. La sensación de los que dicen que estuvieron en el pase, claro.
Habrá que ver si es cierto que estuvieron.
"I was there at the Rave. The opening sequences were absolutely terrible. I felt like the scenes were never going to end. After that, it settled into a pretty nice little film. The opening fight between the Octopus and the Spirit seemed to last about 2 hours (and not in a good way).
Then, we had a flash back to when Sand and the Spirit were kids. This is where the movie should have started. It would have even made a great bookend with the ending and would have really helped the structure of this film.
I really enjoyed Sin City, but I don't think this is nearly as good. Even after some re-shoots and re-edits, it probably still can't be as good. From there literature that they passed out, it appears they are going for a Sin City or 300 type film. It reminded me more of a Dick Tracy type film. The younger readers might not have ever seen Dick Tracy, but I can't think of another film that it reminds me of, at least closely.
It is visually very good, but I felt like Samuel L. Jackson was just way too over the top. They should have toned him down. They said it was a work in progress, but I don't know how you can eliminate much of your main villain and have it work. They did that in the Fantastic Four and it didn't turn out too good with Victor Von Doom's role being diminished.
I rated it good on my evaluation and a possibly recomend. I didn't see any excellents around me. I did see one or two very goods and definitely recomends.
I suggested that they start the movie with the scenes from when the Spirit was a teenager and show more of the love scenes. The scenes with Sand and the Spirit, or Ellen and the Spirit were the best in the movie.
Strong performances from Gabriel Macht, Sarah Paulson, and Dan Lauria. Everyone else's performances were a level or two or three (SLJ) below.
Plaster of Paris and Jaime King's characters didn't even seem like they needed to be in the film. I would suggest they either give them something more to do or eliminate them entirely. It would also have been nice to know what brought the Octopus and Silken Floss together.
As it sits, this movie is a C-, and with some editing could move into the B- range, but I wouldn't hope for much else. I don't know what the budget was, but I don't see this being a smash success during the competitive Christmas release season."
